I guess that explains the “source meta” bits. I love that phrase because it’s so much more clever than “source meta.
Apple, Google, and Facebook get most of the attention. That’s not a surprise though. But the source meta thing is so cool. It’s actually something I’ve heard a lot of people say. The source meta is a meta tag attached to a source that is supposed to identify the source. In Apple’s case, the source meta tag identifies the site that it is attributed to. In Google’s case, the source meta tag identifies the site that is supposed to be responsible for the site.
Its interesting to see that Google is the source meta for all three. Thats because, in order to have those links to your site, you need to be a Google site. The only other site that can link to the source meta of a site is Yahoo, but it only does it when you’re linking from Yahoo. You can’t do that when you’re linking from Google.
For example, in the following tweet, Google refers to its “news” source meta tag as “news.google.com” This is because Google news is the site that is responsible for the news site (i.e. google.com), so you should link to that meta tag with the actual google site.
A common reason why you never link from Google is that you think they might block your site from linking to their meta tag, i.e. you think they might have a robots.txt file that stops Yahoo from linking to your meta tag. Google is actually the only site that can link to the meta tag, hence the need for Google to use it.
